Wars of Religion week 4

As the north won all last weeks games they were on the attack in all three games this week.

Game 1: WOR vs Landsknecht - stubborn defence

The WOR forces had to deploy half their units as a vanguard and hold off an attack from the Germans as the rest of their troops pushed up to join them. They opted for their infantry and artillery in the van with horse advancing.

The Germans tercios led the attack with the limited Horse holding one flank.

The armies collide

The Germans found themselves disordered by accurate fire from the WOR artillery, which placed them  at a disadvantage in the ensuing melee and so they were unable to break through despite greater numbers. Eventually their weaker cavalry force was pushed back and so they were forced to retreat. Southern win (WOR).

We also had our first officer casualty with Chris's CinC dying at the head of his troops.

RIP Chris

Game 2: WOR vs WOR - capture the hills

We welcomed Keith back from his travels this week and he took part in an all Wars of Religion clash in which both sides fought to take and hold a line of hills in the centre of the board.

Southern cuirassiers

The northern forces advanced quickest and too initial control of the hills but were then thrown back by the southerners leaving them in control by the end of turn 5.

Uphill battle - literally

The south held on to win at the end of turn 6. Southern Win

Game 3: Poles vs WOR & Ottomans - For King and Country

In this game both sides seek to destroy the enemy but score bonus points for having 2 forlorn hope units in the central part of the table. The southern forces were joined by Ottomans for this game. Both sides opted to put some of their infantry in the forlorn hope and have the rest of the troops catch.

Polish forlorn hope

Both armies attacked armies attacked on their left with the Ottomans leading the way for the south. The outnumbered Poles moved their best cavalry to counter the Ottoman attack whilst still trying to attack on the other side. This was disrupted by artillery fire and so their attack faltered.

The Poles made a strong counter on their right but some awful dice and accurate Janissary fire blunted that assault and forced them back with heavy loses. Southern win

Campaign Position

A bad night for the north with them being pushed in all three games and on the defensive next week.
